If you do not have it or miss the deadline
There is no fine for not having a domicile certificate. You only cannot claim state quota seats, state jobs and some schemes. Giving false information or false documents to get one can lead to cancellation and criminal action under state rules and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, but we could not confirm the exact section or amount from an official source.

Common questions
Is a domicile certificate the same as a residence certificate?
Most states use them for the same purpose, proving you live in the state. Some exams ask for a specific format, so read their notice.
How many years of stay are needed?
It differs by state. Delhi asks for 3 years of continuous residence. Admission rules may ask for more.
Can I hold domicile of two states?
No. You should hold a domicile certificate of only one state at a time.
