About Govt License

A free, independent guide to the licences and registrations Indian businesses need.

What we do

Starting a business in India means dealing with central, state and municipal registrations, each with its own office, fee and document list. Govt License puts all of it in one checklist for your business and city, and links you to the official portal to apply.

We started with the licences a restaurant owner deals with every year, and expanded to 15 common business types across 76 cities in 24 states.

Who runs this site

Govt License is run by an independent team in India. It is not owned by, paid by or linked to any government department, licensing agent or consultant. You can reach the team at [email protected] or through the contact form.

Why it is free and independent

  • We are not a government body and are not affiliated with any government department.
  • We never collect government fees or process applications. You apply on the official portal.
  • The service is free to use. We do not sell leads and we take no payment from agents or authorities. Official links are never paid placements.

How we verify

Wrong fees cost people money, so every licence shows where its information came from and when it was last checked.

StatusMeaning
CheckedFee or rule matched against an official government document, portal or fee schedule on the date shown.
Not officially verifiedFee varies by office or size, or we only have a reliable secondary source. Confirm on the portal before paying.

Our order of preference for sources: gazette notifications and Acts, official portals and fee schedules, official circulars, then reputable secondary sources. Every checklist item links to its source.

The weekly official-source check

Every week we compare the fee values we hold against the official page they came from. If a value changed, we update it and the "Checked on" date moves. If an official page cannot be read or does not state a fee, the entry stays marked Not officially verified and shows "No official fee published" instead of a guess. A fee is only marked checked when an official source (a .gov.in or .nic.in page, a gazette notice or an official PDF) states it.

Keeping it current

We review the full dataset regularly and update individual entries as soon as a rule change is confirmed. Recent changes are listed on the home page. The date of the last full review is shown in the footer of every page.

Corrections

If you find an error, use Report a correction on any licence or the contact form. We review every report against the official source before changing anything, and aim to act on confirmed errors within 7 working days. When we correct a page, its "Checked on" date and the sitemap date change. To reach us directly, write to [email protected].
