What it is and who pays

Professional tax is a state tax. A business or its owner pays a yearly amount, and an employer also deducts it from staff salaries and pays it to the state. In Maharashtra it is collected by the Maharashtra GST Department.

Deduction from staff salaries

Deduct up to ₹200 a month (₹300 in February) from staff salaries above the state threshold and file PTRC returns. In a partnership, each partner pays ₹2,500 instead of the firm.
