Stamp duty and registration

A gift of immovable property must be made by a registered deed signed by the donor and attested by at least two witnesses. It must be on stamp paper of the value your state requires, and the stamp duty is often lower for gifts between close family members in some states. Check the stamp duty with your state's registration department.

Stamp duty depends on your state and on the document. We do not show an amount here, because it changes and differs by state. Check it on the official portal of your state's registration department. Portals we found on government sites (checked 21 Oct 2026):

For any other state, check stamp duty with your state's registration department.

Yes. A gift of immovable property must be made by a registered deed. The donor signs, and at least two witnesses attest it. Registration is done at the Sub-Registrar office.
Can a gift deed be cancelled?
Not easily. A gift made willingly and fully is generally final. A lawyer can tell you when a gift can be set aside. Think carefully before you sign.
Is there tax on a gift of property?
Stamp duty applies, and tax rules for gifts between relatives and others differ. Ask a chartered accountant or lawyer about the tax effect for you.
