DigiLocker guide: sign up, documents and legal validity
DigiLocker is the government's digital locker for your documents. Documents that issuers put in your Issued Documents section are treated as equal to the originals.
The short answer
DigiLocker is the government's digital locker for your documents. Documents that issuers put in your Issued Documents section are treated as equal to the originals.
Govt License never asks for your Aadhaar number or OTP. Only download from official sites. We do not download anything for you, and you never type personal details on our site.
Steps
- Open digilocker.gov.in or the DigiLocker app yourself
- Choose Sign Up and verify your mobile number with the OTP
- Enter your name and date of birth as per Aadhaar and set your security PIN
- Verify your Aadhaar with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile, on the official page only
- To get a document, go to Issued Documents and choose the issuer, such as the Income Tax Department or the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways
- Verify with the OTP the issuer sends. The document then appears in your Issued Documents section
Documents you can get
- Aadhaar
- PAN card
- Driving licence and vehicle RC
- School and college marksheets, if your board has uploaded them to the National Academic Depository
Keep ready
- A mobile number you use
- Your name and date of birth exactly as they are on your Aadhaar
- A phone or computer to receive the OTP
Good to know
- Only documents in the Issued Documents section count as valid. Files you upload yourself are not treated as issued documents.
- Organisations that use DigiLocker can verify issued documents online. Some others may still ask for a paper copy.
- Govt License never asks for your Aadhaar number or OTP, and we do not use DigiLocker on your behalf.
Problems and fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Document not found | The issuer may not have your record in DigiLocker yet. Ask the issuing office, for example your RTO for a driving licence. |
| Name mismatch | DigiLocker can fetch a document only when the name on it matches the name on your Aadhaar. Correct the name in the wrong record first. |
| Marksheet not available | Digital records are there only if your board has uploaded them to the National Academic Depository. Ask the board. |
| Forgot the security PIN | Use Forgot security PIN on the sign in page and verify with your Aadhaar and date of birth. |
